KANTEL is owned and led by members of First Nations. The owners hold the executive positions and are active in day-to-day operations.
Indigenous participationWhere the name Kantel comes from
KANTEL comes from Kanata, a word from the Iroquoian languages meaning village. It is the same word that gave Canada its name: in the 16e century, people living along the St. Lawrence used it to describe their territory, Europeans wrote it down, and it ended up naming the whole country.
A village is not a collection of houses and businesses. It is a network: the connections matter as much as the places, and what holds it together is never visible from any single building. That is exactly what an organization wants from its infrastructure — sites, teams and applications that hold together, without it having to think about them.
Hence the name, Kanata joined to tel. A company based in Kahnawake that builds and operates the communications infrastructure of businesses and institutions across the country, under a word that comes from here.
